Baritone
Jan Buchwald, born in Solingen, received his musical education in
Hanover, Berlin and Cologne followed by master classes with
Norman Shetler, Irwin Gage and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
First engagement with the Hanover State Opera. In 2000 Jan
Buchwald was a member of the International Opera Studio of the
Hamburg State Opera. Since 2002 / 2003 he has been a member of
the ensemble at Hamburg State Opera where he has sung roles
such as Kothner / Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Heerrufer /
Lohengrin, Reinhard Keiser: Der lächerliche Prinz Jodelet / title
role, Minister / Fidelio, Geisterbote / Die Frau ohne Schatten and
role debuts as Wolfram / Tannhäuser and Donner / Das Rheingold.
Jan Buchwald has performed with the Munich State Opera, new
production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg / Kothner (leading
team: Zubin Mehta / Thomas Langhoff). Debut Salzburg Festival,
concert Manfred (Robert Schumann) and Bregenz Festival (2005),
Der lustige Krieg / Balthasar Groot. Teatro de la Maestranza,
Seville, Lulu / Athlet and Tierbändiger (2006) and the same roles
with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2008 in a production conducted
by Sir Andrew Davis. Teatro alla Scala di Milano, new production of
Das Rheingold / Donner in 2010 (Daniel Barenboim), guest contract
with the Cologne Opera for 2009 / 2010 and 2010 / 2011 seasons.
Berlin State Opera, guest contract for the 2010 / 2011 and 2012 /
2013 seasons.
Equally at home on the concert platform, Jan Buchwald has
appeared with the Schleswig-Holstein-Musikfestival, in Berlin,
Hanover, Cologne, Frankfurt / Oder, Szczecin and Freiburg /
Breisgau. Participation in Kurt Weill's opera Der Protagonist (under
the musical direction of John Mauceri, Deutsches Symphonie-
Orchester Berlin with CD-production). Franz Schubert: Winterreise,
staged production by Uwe Eric Laufenberg, Schloßtheater Potsdam
and Schiller-Marathon, Berlin with TV-production for ARD /
Theaterkanal. Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Brahms: Ein
deutsches Requiem.
